St. Catherine's Point

St Catherine’s Point marks the southern tip of the Isle of Wight, where the rugged Back of the Wight meets the slow-moving slopes of Ventnor’s Undercliff. The land around Niton holds traces of much older times, including a Bronze Age burial mound examined in the 1920s. A small chapel once stood here but vanished long ago, leaving only the barrow as a reminder of the past. The point is often wrapped in fog, which made it a poor choice for a lighthouse but a useful site for weather watching. Its reports join twenty-one others in the BBC Shipping Forecast, guiding sailors far beyond the island. The constant wind and waves shape the coastline, carving cliffs and leaving smooth rock platforms at low tide. The place carries a story of guilt and atonement. In the 14th century Walter de Godeton was ordered to build a beacon after taking wine from a wrecked ship. The result, St Catherine’s Oratory on the down above, is Britain’s oldest surviving medieval lighthouse, known locally as the Pepperpot for its squat stone shape. A later attempt in 1785 began a new tower but left it half-finished, earning the name the Salt Pot. The railway even named one of its express engines after the point, the LB&SCR H1 class No 40. Visitors walk the cliff path from Niton to reach the weather station and the ruined Salt Pot. The Pepperpot stands on St Catherine’s Down, a short climb inland, its thick walls weathered by centuries of wind. From the point itself the view stretches across the English Channel on clear days, while the Undercliff below shows the slow creep of landslips. The radio mast beside the old station recalls the first over-the-horizon wireless signal sent in 1901. The air smells of salt and wet grass, and the only sounds are the cry of gulls and the hiss of breakers on the rocks.
