Ochsenwerder
Ochsenwerder is a quarter in Hamburg’s borough of Bergedorf, lying on the south-eastern edge where the Elbe river widens. The land is flat and open, cut by drainage ditches and small canals that once served the farms. To the south the Oortkaten lake reflects the sky, while the quarter borders Kirchwerder, Reitbrook, Tatenberg and Spadenland. Across the Elbe it meets Wilhelmsburg and the state of Lower Saxony, so the quarter feels both city and countryside at once. Agriculture still shapes Ochsenwerder’s identity within the metropolitan area. Market gardens and orchards stretch between the scattered houses, supplying local greengrocers and restaurants. The soil is rich alluvial loam, ideal for vegetables and soft fruit. In spring the blossom on the fruit trees draws visitors for short walks along the farm tracks. A few old brick farmsteads survive, their gabled roofs and red doors recalling the 19th century. Visitors find quiet lanes lined with apple and plum trees, their branches heavy in late summer. The Oortkaten lake offers a place to sit beside the water and watch herons wade in the shallows. From the riverbank the Elbe flows broad and slow, carrying barges past the quarter’s edge. At dusk the lights of Wilhelmsburg flicker across the water, while the scent of cut grass lingers in the air.
