Kirche Neuhaus (Gaming)

The Catholic parish church of the Finding of the True Cross stands in the centre of Neuhaus am Zellerrain, a village in the Gaming municipal area of Scheibbs district, Lower Austria. It belongs to the Gaming deanery in the diocese of St Pölten and is listed as a protected monument. The present building replaced an earlier chapel next to the Carthusian estate and was constructed between 1854 and 1856 to designs by Josef Hieser. In 1779 the parish had been separated from Gaming, and today it remains a branch church of Lackenhof-Neuhaus. A major restoration took place in 1980. The church is a neo-Gothic hall with a narrow choir and a west tower. Outside, Tuff stone walls and artificial stone details support a copper-covered roof with flying buttresses at every corner. Inside, the high altar, altar table with tabernacle and crucifix were carved by Josef Gasser, and the organ was built by Franz Xaver Hölzl in 1856. A wrought-iron basket-handle door from the old chapel of about 1740–50 still guards the entrance, and one bell bears the name of Johann Caspar Hofbauer dated 1782.
