Clark Memorial Church

The Clark Memorial Church stands in the centre of Largs, a town on Scotland’s Ayrshire coast. It is a Neogothic building designed by William Kerr of Paisley and completed in 1892. The church occupies the corner of Bath Street and Church Street, with St John’s Church just to the south. A three-storey bell tower rises on the south side, linked to the main body by a half-octagonal stair turret. The tower is capped by an octagonal spire with lucarnes and small pinnacles at its corners. The church’s exterior shows typical Neogothic detail. The west gable displays a large traceried window of five lancets, flanked by carved reliefs of Moses and John. The east wall holds a large stained-glass window, while the south-east corner contains a sacristy and a hall. The south side of the tower carries a pointed entrance portal with richly moulded architrave. Above it run blind arcading and tall paired lancets on every face. Inside, the church remains in regular use for worship. The interior follows the plan of a broad nave with side aisles lit by pointed lancets. The tower stair turret opens into a small vestibule before the main door. The sacristy and hall provide space for meetings and Sunday school. From the street the building presents a continuous skyline of gables, pinnacles and traceried windows, marking it as one of Largs’s most distinctive landmarks.
