Bauernkriegsmuseum

The Deutsches Bauernkriegsmuseum stands in Böblingen, a town in the Stuttgart region. It occupies the restored Zehntscheuer, a historic granary, alongside the municipal art gallery. The museum opened in 1988 to commemorate the German Peasants' War of 1525. Historians Günter Scholz founded and long directed the institution. Cornelia Wenzel led it from 2006 until 2022, when Lea Wegner took over. The permanent display traces the protest marches and mass uprisings of the peasants. It focuses on the decisive Battle of Böblingen on 12 May 1525, where the rebels were crushed. The exhibition honours the peasant leaders and their tactics while examining the facts and their background. Daily rural life during the period also features prominently. Temporary special exhibitions run regularly. Visitors find a clear narrative of the conflict through maps, documents and artefacts. Portraits and letters bring the movement’s figures to life. The restored granary itself, with its heavy oak beams, forms part of the experience. The adjoining gallery shows modern art that sometimes links to the historical themes. Böblingen’s town centre, with its market square and half-timbered houses, lies just a short walk away.
