Harvestehude
Harvestehude is a quarter in the Eimsbüttel borough of Hamburg, Germany. It sits on a Geest ridge west of the Außenalster lake. The quarter borders Rotherbaum, Eimsbüttel, Hoheluft-West, Hoheluft-Ost, Eppendorf, and Winterhude. To the north, the Isebekkanal canal separates it from Hoheluft-Ost and Eppendorf. The area’s name comes from the former St John’s Monastery, which moved here in the 13th century. The quarter’s history goes back to at least 1246, when a monastery stood near today’s Pepermölenbek stream. The monastery was demolished in 1530, and the land came under city control. The church of St John’s Harvestehude was built between 1880 and 1882, though it now lies in the neighbouring Rotherbaum quarter. The Tennis court Am Rothenbaum and the NDR broadcasting centre are located in Harvestehude. Visitors find a quiet residential area with tree-lined streets and views of the Außenalster. The Isebekkanal adds a waterway to the landscape. The quarter has a mix of historic villas and modern buildings. A walk along the ridge offers wide views over the lake and the city. The area feels calm yet well connected to central Hamburg.
