River Sowe

The River Sowe winds for about 19 kilometres through the West Midlands, rising near Bedworth and joining the River Avon south of Stoneleigh. It passes under motorways and roads, through Coventry’s northern and eastern suburbs, and near Baginton where Roman remains have been found. The river’s course is marked by steep banks and conservation areas, showing how industry and nature share the landscape. The Sowe Valley Footpath follows the river for nearly 14 kilometres, linking conservation sites such as Hawkesbury Junction and Stonebridge Meadows. Walkers pass Wyken Slough and Stoke Floods, where wildlife thrives beside the water. A railway viaduct built in the 19th century still carries trains across the river, standing as a reminder of the area’s transport history. Visitors find quiet paths beside the water, places where herons stand still and wildflowers grow along the banks. The remains of Lunt Fort overlook one steep bank, offering a glimpse of the past. Bridges of different ages cross the river, from modern roads to old stone structures that have carried travellers for centuries.
