Saint Alexius of Rome Church

The parish church in Aurach am Hongar stands in the village centre of Aurach am Hongar in the Vöcklabruck district of Upper Austria. It is dedicated to Saint Alexius and belongs to the Schörfling deanery within the Diocese of Linz. The church and its former cemetery area are protected as historic monuments. The church began as a chapel consecrated in 1458 by the Passau auxiliary bishop Siegmund von Salona. In 1774 it became an independent parish church and gained its first resident priest in 1784. A fire in 1888 destroyed both the church and nearby houses, leading to a complete rebuilding. The present church was consecrated in 1893 by Bishop Franz Maria Doppelbauer. The parish also acquired a new cemetery outside the village in 1953 and a modern parish centre in 1965. Inside, the church contains an organ installed in 1959 by Johann Pirchner after the previous instrument was lost in a fire. The organ case was crafted by Franz Loy’s joinery. The building preserves its late-19th-century character, with simple furnishings and a quiet atmosphere. The surrounding area includes the former churchyard, now grassed over, and the newer cemetery set among gentle hills.
