Heilig Kreuz
The Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche stands in Bocholt as a brick-built basilica designed by Dominikus Böhm. Its long, narrow bricks make the church appear taller than it is. The main entrance is framed in basalt lava, while the interior relies on simple lines and plain white walls. The church was consecrated in 1937 and served as a parish church until 2008. It now houses a kindergarten after conversion work. The four steel bells date from 1951, cast by the Bochumer Verein. The organ, built in 1938–39 and later enlarged, once had 45 registers. Inside, the 48-metre nave is lit by tall, narrow side windows that give an even glow. Steps lead up to the raised choir where a travertine altar stands before a plain east wall. Behind it lies the sunken baptismal chapel. To the left is a small chapel with vivid stained glass showing scenes from Christ’s Passion.
