Schänzlekopf

Schänzlekopf is a mountain in the Allgäu Alps, part of the Rauhhornzug range in Bavaria. It stands between the Schänzlespitze to the northeast and the Notländsattel to the west. The summit itself holds little tourist appeal, with no marked path leading to it. Access comes only via the Jubiläumsweg trail, which winds through the surrounding peaks. Its name first appears in an 1844 land survey, though earlier records call it Weilandseck or even Alpatinspitzen. The mountain’s title comes from the German word ‘Schanze’, meaning a small border fort. During a dispute, a sconce was built between Schänzlekopf and Schänzlespitze to strengthen the claim. This fortification gives the peak its current name, replacing older labels tied to local figures or legends. The 1844 survey marks the first written trace of the mountain’s modern identity. Visitors reach the area through the Jubiläumsweg, a high alpine trail passing through rugged terrain. The route offers views of the Allgäu Alps without the crowds of busier peaks. Nearby, the Schänzlespitze provides a clearer path for those seeking a marked summit. The landscape remains wild, with no facilities or signposted routes on Schänzlekopf itself. The absence of tourism keeps the mountain’s history and scenery undisturbed.
