Burg Neuburg

The Neuburg is the ruined remains of a hilltop castle standing on a loop of the Kocher river near Gelbingen, a district of Schwäbisch Hall in the Hohenlohe plain. It once commanded wide views over the valley but now only low stone fragments survive. The site sits on a flat-topped hill 344 metres above sea level, about 700 metres west of the village centre. Historians in the 19th century recorded that the Neuburg belonged to the Eberhard and Philipp families of Eltershofen. The owners dismantled the structure to reuse its dressed stone, and the same blocks were later built into a chapel in Gelbingen. A 17th-century heraldic book even shows the family’s coat of arms labelled ‘von Neuenburg’. Visitors reach the site along a quiet farm track that climbs gently from the edge of Gelbingen. A low mound and scattered limestone blocks mark the former keep and curtain walls. From the crest there are long views across the river meadows and towards the wooded hills of the Swabian-Franconian forest.
