Kath. Pfarrkirche hl. Martin, Bad Goisern

The Roman Catholic parish church of Bad Goisern stands in the centre of the village in the Gmunden district of Upper Austria. It is dedicated to Saint Martin and belongs to the Bad Ischl deanery in the Diocese of Linz. The building is protected as a listed monument. The church’s history begins with a 1320 record of its consecration by the Passau suffragan bishop after a fire in 1495 led to repairs. Further fires in 1534 and 1730 required restorations, and in the 19th century the nave was rebuilt as a cross-shaped hall with a barrel vault. The late-Gothic choir from the original church, with its net-ribbed vault and three-sided closure, still survives as the eastern arm. The north portal, richly profiled and dating from 1530, remains in place. Inside, the high altar of 1691 came from Niederthalheim church and was restored in 1959. The baroque tabernacle came from St Peter’s in Linz. Six double-sided Gothic panels from the late 15th century, painted by Rueland Frueauf the Elder, hang in the Marienkapelle, which also features delicate star ribs on wall shafts. The former choir now serves as this chapel, its vault accented by a half trefoil in the central lozenge. The late-baroque pulpit, installed in 1966, replaced a neo-Gothic predecessor.
