Fox Covert

Fox Covert is a small nature reserve east of Royston in North Hertfordshire. It covers 2.9 hectares of mature beech woodland planted in the 19th century. White helleborine orchids grow on the woodland floor. Deer move quietly through the trees and many bird species nest in the branches. In 1964 Mr Fordham of Letchworth gave the site to the Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust, making it the Trust’s first reserve. The reserve lies beside Therfield Heath, a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The Hertfordshire Way long-distance footpath crosses the woodland, linking it to wider countryside. Visitors walk shaded rides between the tall beeches. Spring brings white helleborine orchids into flower. Summer and autumn reveal deer and a chorus of woodland birds. Paths wind gently through the beech trees and open glades. The canopy filters sunlight, creating dappled shade on the ground. Deer tracks cross the leaf litter, showing recent visitors. Bird calls echo overhead and orchids appear among the roots. The reserve feels quiet except for the rustle of leaves and birdsong.
