Fir Park

Fir Park is a football stadium in Motherwell, North Lanarkshire. It has been home to Motherwell Football Club since 1896, though the club was formed a decade earlier. The ground sits in a wooded area once belonging to Lord Hamilton of Dalzell, whose racing colours—claret and amber—became the team’s colours. The stadium’s layout is unusual, with one large stand and three smaller ones, giving it an unbalanced look. It became all-seater in the 1990s, reducing capacity from over 35,000 to 13,677. The record crowd of 35,632 watched a Scottish Cup replay against Rangers in 1951–52. The stadium carries deep ties to the club’s history and the local community. The Phil O’Donnell Stand honours the former captain who died on the pitch in 2007, with a sculpted tribute added later. The John Hunter Stand, renamed in 2016, remembers the manager of the club’s only league title-winning team in 1931–32. The South Stand, opened in 1993, offers views across Motherwell to the Ochil Hills and Ben Lomond. The Davie Cooper Stand, opened in 1995, is named after a beloved player and houses the club shop. Visitors find a mix of modern facilities and historic touches. The Phil O’Donnell Stand has two hospitality suites, a television gantry, and press facilities. The John Hunter Stand, once an open terrace, now seats fans with extra legroom on every second step. The South Stand’s upper deck provides panoramic views, while the Davie Cooper Stand includes the club shop and hospitality boxes. The pitch slopes noticeably from east to west, causing drainage challenges and occasional fixture disruptions. Despite this, the stadium remains a focal point for football in the area.
