The Castles and Town Walls of King Edward in Gwynedd is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in North West Wales. It includes four major fortifications: Beaumaris, Harlech, Caernarfon and Conwy. UNESCO calls them the finest examples of late 13th-century and early 14th-century military architecture in Europe. These castles were built after Edward I’s invasion of North Wales in 1282. They formed part of a wider ‘Ring of Iron’ designed to secure English control. The project was costly and faced setbacks, including Welsh revolts in 1294 led by Madog ap Llywelyn. Work slowed when Edward’s wars in Scotland drained royal funds. The fortifications played key roles in later conflicts, including the Welsh Revolt of the early 15th century and the Wars of the Roses. Though their military importance declined after the Tudors took the throne in 1485, they were used again during the English Civil War. Conwy and Harlech were partly slighted after the war, but Caernarfon and Beaumaris remained intact. By the late 17th century the castles were ruins, but they attracted artists in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Victorian improvements restored many medieval features, and in 1986 the sites were declared a World Heritage Site. Visitors today find massive stone castles with concentric defences, barbicans and grand gatehouses. Caernarfon’s castle and town walls include expensive stonework meant to evoke Roman imperial power. The royal architect James of Saint George played a central role in their design. Harlech overlooks the sea, Conwy controls a river crossing, and Beaumaris sits near a strategic port. Each site blends military strength with symbols of royal authority. The surrounding towns still show traces of their medieval street plans. The walls and castles stand as powerful reminders of Edward I’s campaign to reshape Wales.
