Kriegerkapelle Wetzelsdorf

The Kriegerkapelle stands in Wetzelsdorf, the fifteenth district of Graz, beside Steinbergstraße. A small square building with an apse and a bell gable, it began as a chapel in the late seventeenth century. In 1958 it was enlarged and rededicated as a war memorial chapel. Inside, a flat-panel vault spans the space. The altar niche holds a late eighteenth-century wooden statue of Saint Florian and others, while a nineteenth-century Madonna and Child flank a candle-bearing angel. The original wrought-iron gate from the early 1800s has been removed to the Kunstgewerbemuseum Graz, leaving a matching iron grille at the entrance. The chapel’s quiet corner offers a place for reflection beside busy Steinbergstraße. Its simple lines and modest scale make it easy to overlook, yet the figures and fittings tell of centuries of devotion and craftsmanship.
