Burgstall Kirchberg ob der Donau

The Burgstall Kirchberg ob der Donau stands on a steep rocky outcrop 613 metres above sea level in the hills above the Danube in Upper Austria. The site once commanded the river valley and the old road that followed it. Only a small ruined core remains, perched on the edge of a cliff that drops sharply toward the water. The ruins lie within the modern village of Kirchberg ob der Donau, yet the place feels remote because of the rocky terrain. Two deep rock-cut ditches once protected the approach from the landward side. Fragments of retaining walls still show where the main defences stood. The Kirchberg family first appears in records in 1120, when Chadalhoch de chürchperch is mentioned. By 1263 the stronghold was called a ‘Veste’ in a Passau lease document. The family served the Schaunberg counts in the 15th century, and Siegmund von Kirchberg even acted as their legal representative. In 1516 Emperor Maximilian I allowed Bernhard and Sebastian von Kirchberg to rebuild the decaying castle. Later owners included the imperial customs collector Georg von Kauthen and his descendants, who rose to comital rank by the 18th century. Today the so-called small Burgstall shows the original foundations and two rock-cut chambers on the side facing Obermühl. Visitors reach the site only from the landward side, climbing past the remnants of the outer ditches. The castle’s former farmstead below is still farmed and adds to the rural atmosphere. From the ruins there are wide views across the Danube valley toward the Mühlviertel uplands. The contrast between the crumbling medieval walls and the working farmland makes the place quietly impressive.
