Bermondsey Abbey

Bermondsey Abbey was a Benedictine monastery in what is now Bermondsey Square, within the London Borough of Southwark. A religious site existed there as early as the 8th century, linked to the Mercian monastery of Medeshamstede. The abbey was refounded in the late 11th century by Alwinus Child with royal support from William the Conqueror and later kings. It began as a Cluniac priory under four monks from France, growing into a major religious and economic centre. The monks reclaimed marshes, built embankments and created St Saviour’s Dock for safe river access. By the late 14th century it became independent, recognised as an abbey in 1390. The abbey held strong royal connections, hosting Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine at Christmas 1154. Their son Prince Henry was born there in February 1155. Elizabeth Woodville, widow of Edward IV, lived and died at the abbey after 1487. Notable figures including William, Count of Mortain, were buried on the site. Archaeologists have uncovered up to 750 burials, revealing the abbey’s role as a place of honour and memory. Its estates stretched across southern England, from Surrey to Kent, supporting both its community and wider religious life. Today the abbey’s footprint survives in Bermondsey Square and nearby streets. The priory close once covered 140 acres of meadow and riverside land. Parts of the abbey were incorporated into later buildings, including a house used by the Earl of Sussex in the 16th century. The dock named after the abbey still marks the tidal inlet of the River Neckinger. Visitors can walk the old routes that once connected the abbey to Southwark’s churches and markets. The site remains a quiet reminder of London’s medieval past.
