Fernmeldeturm Wuppertal-Küllenhahn

The Fernmeldeturm Wuppertal-Küllenhahn is a steel-concrete communications tower on the southern heights of Wuppertal. It stands 330 metres above sea level in the Küllenhahn district. Operated by Deutsche Funkturm GmbH, it replaced a 35-metre temporary lattice mast on the same spot. Built in 1956, the eleven-storey tower is 98.5 metres tall. Its four antenna platforms sit between 41 and 67 metres high. The tower was erected for FREDA microwave links on the Hamburg–Köln television route used by NDR and WDR. It also added 60 telephone circuits and served the Bundespost’s mobile telephone network. Today it carries DVB-T2 HD broadcasts on channels 29, 35, 40, 43, 46 and 48. Visitors find an unobstructed view across Wuppertal’s steep valley landscape. The name Rigi-Kulm recalls a former hilltop restaurant opened in 1910 by Wilhelm Gietenbruch. His daughter Helene brought the Swiss mountain name back from her hotel training in 1913. The restaurant closed in 2013 and was demolished two years later.
