Jüdischer bzw. KZ-Friedhof

The city cemetery in Wels serves all faiths and people without one. It stands in the Neustadt district on Friedhofstraße, covering 16.1 hectares under Denkmalschutz. The main entrance in the south has the largest car park, with further gates to the west and north. The cemetery holds four war grave sites, including a soldiers’ cemetery and a KZ field. A 1916-style double-headed eagle crowns the central war memorial, listing names of Wels soldiers lost in the First World War. Nearby lie graves of Major Charvát and men of the k.u.k. Infantry Regiment 14. A separate section remembers 164 bombing victims of 1944–45. The Jewish part in the north-west contains two memorials for 1945 victims from Gunskirchen subcamp. Paths lead through numbered grave fields marked by wrought-iron tablets. The central avenue holds the 1511 Lichtsäule, the city’s oldest small monument, and two 1949 plaques naming 31 resistance fighters. The Jewish section’s older stone recalls 1,032 political war victims, while the 2001 memorial names about 1,030 people who died after liberation. A 2019 farewell plaza in field K offers an outdoor space for leave-taking.
