Burgruine
The Burgstall Oberschloss stands on the Herrenberg ridge above the village of Castell in Lower Franconia. A medieval hilltop fort once occupied the site, later replaced in the early modern period by the Upper Castle whose ruins remain. Both strongholds served as the ancestral seat of the Counts of Castell, whose family history is woven into the stones of the Schlossberg. The site’s layered past stretches back to at least the 13th century when the counts first made it their home. Written records from 1258 already speak of two castles in Castell, divided between brothers Heinrich and Hermann. Repeated wars—the German Peasants’ War, the Thirty Years’ War, and the Margrave Wars—left the upper castle in ruins by 1640. Yet its final years produced one lasting feature: the octagonal stair turret, designed with heraldic shields and completed in 1614. Visitors today walk the Schlossberg’s steep vineyard slopes to find the last standing remnant, the octagonal turret rising from grassy foundations. The outline of the old curtain wall and moats can still be traced along the ridge crest. Below, the village roofs of Castell cluster around St Johannes church, seven hundred metres away. The hill’s vineyards, worked for centuries, frame the ruins with orderly rows of vines. From the western knoll the tower mound of Altcastell appears, marking the oldest fortified core.
