St Helen's Church, Burton Joyce

St Helen’s Church stands in the village of Burton Joyce in Nottinghamshire. Built in the 13th century, it is one of the oldest surviving churches in the area. The south aisle was added in 1725, while the arcades were rebuilt in 1878 by the architect T. H. Wyatt. The church shares a parish with Holy Trinity Church in Bulcote and St Luke’s Church in Stoke Bardolph. Its Grade I listing recognises its national importance. The church contains an organ installed in 1879 by Lloyd and Dudgeon. This instrument was later replaced in 2005 by a new organ built by Principal Pipe Organs. The original organ’s history is recorded in the National Pipe Organ Register. The building’s long history is reflected in its architecture and fittings. Visitors find a quiet country church with medieval roots and later additions. The nave and aisles show different periods of construction. The organ loft holds the modern instrument in a space once filled by its predecessor. The churchyard and surrounding village offer a peaceful setting.
