Kasereck

The Kasereck is a high mountain peak in the Schladming Tauern range, part of the Lower Tauern in Salzburg. It stands at 2,740 metres above sea level and forms the most prominent summit on a ridge that runs south from the Hochgolling. This ridge separates two valleys, the Göriachtal to the west and the Lessachtal to the east. The mountain lies entirely within the state of Salzburg and is best reached from the village of Göriach in the Lungau region. The climb is often started from the Göriacher Winkel, passing through alpine pastures and a glacial lake before reaching the summit. The route to the top is straightforward and well-trodden, beginning at the Piendlalm farm and following a path that leads past the Piendlsee. This lake sits at 2,033 metres and offers a calm, reflective spot before the final climb. The southwest arête and west flank provide the easiest ascent, avoiding steep or technical sections. Climbers pass through alpine meadows rich with wildflowers in summer and encounter marmots and ibex in the higher slopes. The views from the summit stretch across the Tauern range and into the Lungau valley below. At the summit, visitors find a small cross and a broad panorama of the surrounding peaks. The ridge walk offers dramatic vistas of the Göriachtal and Lessachtal valleys, with the Piendlsee visible far below. The air is thin and the silence deep, broken only by the occasional call of a golden eagle. The descent follows the same route, returning through the alpine pastures where cattle graze in summer. The whole journey takes a full day for most walkers, but the sense of achievement at the top makes it worthwhile.
