Kleiner Semmering Pass
The Kleine Semmering is a low pass in the Vienna Woods, rising to 463 metres where Niederösterreich meets the eastern Alps. It sits on the watershed between the Wienfluss and the Liesingbach, marking the boundary between the districts of Mödling and St. Pölten. The road from Breitenfurt climbs steadily upward, while the northern side from Wolfsgraben twists through several hairpin bends. Until 1872 travellers used a route further north that passed the Annen-Kreuz shrine. Locals sometimes call the nearby Hafnerberg by the same name. The pass carries a quiet road that once linked Breitenfurt with Wolfsgraben, a route older than the modern carriageway. Its modest height makes it easy to cross on foot or by bicycle, offering gentle gradients for riders. The watershed line here shows how water flowing into the Danube system divides at this single ridge. The older Annen-Kreuz route reminds visitors of the pass’s earlier importance before the straighter road was built. Visitors find an unassuming summit with open views across the Vienna Woods and the surrounding countryside. The winding northern approach is popular with cyclists seeking a short but satisfying climb. The Hafnerberg side provides quieter paths for walkers who want to explore the lower slopes. The pass itself is little more than a gentle rise in the landscape, yet it holds a quiet charm for those who pause on its quiet road.
