Creswell Crags

Creswell Crags is a limestone gorge on the border of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. It contains caves that were home to Neanderthals and modern humans during the Last Glacial Period, between 60,000 and 10,000 years ago. The caves hold the northernmost cave art in Europe, including engravings of animals and figures. Archaeologists have found flint tools, bones, and carved objects from different prehistoric cultures. The site shows layers of occupation from Neanderthals, early modern humans, and later groups like the Creswellian culture. The caves at Creswell Crags include Mother Grundy’s Parlour, Robin Hood Cave, Pin Hole, and Church Hole. Each cave has yielded important finds, such as a bone engraved with a horse’s head in Robin Hood Cave. The Pin Hole contains the Pinhole Cave Man figure and an ivory pin with etched lines. Church Hole has over 80 engravings on its walls and was used until Roman times. Excavations have uncovered tools, animal remains, and evidence of human activity spanning tens of thousands of years. Visitors can explore the caves and see the prehistoric engravings firsthand. The site also has a visitor centre with displays of artefacts, including a model of a cave hyena. The gorge and its caves sit in a quiet landscape near the villages of Creswell and Whitwell. The discoveries at Creswell Crags have made it an important place for understanding Britain’s early human history. The cave art and tools provide a rare glimpse into the lives of people and animals from the distant past.
