Fforest Castle

Mwnt y Fforest stands on a quiet hillside near Treflys in Powys. It is a simple earthen mound without the usual surrounding wall called a bailey. Such mounds were built across Wales mainly between the late 11th and the late 12th centuries from soil and stone, often surrounded by a ditch. The Normans introduced this style of fortification from France and the Welsh adopted it. Most of these mounds in Britain are found along the borderlands known as the Marches. The largest clusters lie in Shropshire, Cheshire, Herefordshire, Powys and Flintshire. Cadw recognises Mwnt y Fforest as a scheduled monument with reference BR131. The mound offers sweeping views over the surrounding countryside. Visitors can walk around the ditch and up the gentle slope to the top. The site remains peaceful, far from modern roads and buildings.
