Titanic Belfast

Titanic Belfast stands on Queen’s Island at the mouth of Belfast Lough, a reclaimed stretch of land where Harland & Wolff once built the Olympic, Titanic and Britannic. The building itself rises like the prow of a ship, its 3,000 silver shards catching the light above the very slipways where Titanic was fitted out. Inside, eight floors hold more than 12,000 square metres of galleries, conference rooms and education spaces dedicated to the liner’s story. The site also includes the last surviving White Star tender, the SS Nomadic, moored nearby. Nearby cranes named Samson and Goliath still tower over the docks, silent witnesses to the yard’s past. The attraction has drawn millions since it opened in 2012, with record years seeing over 840,000 visitors. More than four-fifths of guests come from outside Northern Ireland, and the centre has welcomed figures such as Queen Elizabeth II and oceanographer Robert Ballard. Awards include the World’s Leading Tourism Attraction in 2016, recognising its role in reshaping the city’s identity. The project was funded half by public bodies and half by private investors, aiming to revive a derelict quarter. Its success has helped make it the most visited tourist site in Northern Ireland. Inside, visitors follow a sequence of galleries that trace the liner’s design, construction and loss. On the top floor, the Titanic Suite seats 750 beneath a full-scale replica of the grand staircase from the 1997 film. The staircase alone weighs four tonnes and is made from 10,000 parts. Outside, the bronze figure Titanica stands on a brass base, arms outstretched toward the river. The surrounding docks and slipways remain, preserved as heritage features. Together they form a maritime landscape that tells the story of Belfast’s shipbuilding age.
