Pfarrkirche Großwarasdorf

The Roman Catholic parish church of Großwarasdorf stands on a hill at the western edge of the village in the Burgenland district of Oberpullendorf. It is dedicated to Saint Demetrius and belongs to the Croatian deanery of Großwarasdorf. The building occupies a prominent position above the surrounding houses and vineyards. The church has been a parish since before 1383, though the present structure dates from the first half of the 18th century. Restorations took place in 1859 and 1958, preserving its Baroque character. The single-nave design includes a recessed choir with a straight end and a three-storey west tower topped by a stone pyramid roof. Inside, the three-bay nave is covered by a cross-ribbed vault, while the choir has a cap vault. A narrow triumphal arch separates the two spaces. The mid-18th-century furnishings include a high altar with a painting of Saint Demetrius framed by twisted columns and pilasters. Side figures depict Saints Peter and Paul, King Stephen and Saint Ladislaus, while the attic shows a relief of the Holy Trinity. The two side altars mirror the high altar’s design, one dedicated to Saint Joseph with figures of Saints Sebastian and Roch, the other to the Immaculate Conception flanked by Saints Joachim and Anne. The Baroque pulpit features seated Evangelists and a figure of Saint Michael on its sounding board. A wooden baptismal font with a small sculpted Baptism group and an 18th-century wooden crucifix stand on the right side, while a carved Madonna and Child from the early 19th century occupies the left wall.
