Branxholme Castle
Branxholme Castle stands five storeys high beside Branxholme village, three miles south-west of Hawick in the rolling hills of the Scottish Borders. The present tower house rises from ground once owned by Clan Scott since 1420, though earlier buildings were burned by the Earl of Northumberland in 1532. During the War of the Rough Wooing the castle resisted English attack in 1547, English observers remarking that cannon would be needed to take it. In 1570 the Scotts themselves partly demolished the structure before Sir Walter Scott of Buccleuch began rebuilding in 1571. The 5th Duke of Buccleuch later commissioned William Burn to remodel the castle in 1837. The castle is worth the journey for its layered history and the survival of its sixteenth-century tower. The rebuilt house withstood sieges, arson and deliberate slighting before rising again under the Scotts. Sir Walter Scott’s widow Margaret Douglas completed the work in 1576, and the family’s role as Wardens of the Middle March kept the castle at the centre of border affairs. After twelve years empty, Carol Shanley and Brian Desport restored the castle in 2017 as a family home and business. The Branksome Hall School in Toronto keeps a replica of a castle mantle, linking the site to distant shores. Visitors find a five-storey tower with vaulted cellars and a spiral newel stair inside the sixteenth-century core. The later mansion wraps around the old tower, offering guest rooms, a café and a spa within its stone walls. Weddings are celebrated in the refurbished chambers, and the surrounding gardens and orchards recall the pleasant grounds noted by English officers in 1570. The castle’s poetic legacy appears in Sir Walter Scott’s ballads and poems, linking the place to the “bauld Buccleuch” of Border legend.
