Fächerbad
The Fächerbad is a combined indoor and outdoor swimming complex with a sauna, set in the Traugott-Bender-Sportpark in Karlsruhe-Hagsfeld. It opened in 1982 after years of planning and negotiation between local swimming clubs and the city. The name comes from the fan-shaped layout of the outdoor pools, which fan out from the main building. The complex has hosted major events such as the 100th German Swimming Championships in 1988 and the World Games in 1989. These included Flossen- and Rettungsschwimmen, with Prince Albert II of Monaco attending as a guest. Over 13 million visitors have used the facilities since it opened, making it one of the city’s most popular leisure centres. Inside, the indoor pool area contains a 50-metre competition pool, a 25-metre training pool, a diving pool and a children’s pool. Outside, there is a large lawn for sunbathing, a children’s playground, three beach-volleyball courts and a small football pitch. A warm paddling pool and massage jets add to the variety, while the sauna offers a quieter retreat.
