Woising

The Grosse Woising is a limestone peak of the Totes Gebirge range, standing 2,064 metres above sea level where Styria meets Upper Austria. Its rounded dome rises above the Almsee to the north-east and the Latschen-covered high plateau to the south-west, overlooking the Albert-Appel-Haus. From Linz and the Upper Austrian heartland the mountain’s hemispherical shape makes it an unmistakable landmark in the range’s skyline.
Climbers reach the summit from the Appelhaus in about two hours by following the 201/E4 long-distance trail for 200 metres, then turning north-east on marked path 232. At the top a metal cross and a visitors’ book sit on the rocky crest, offering a quiet place to rest and look out across the Dachstein plateau.
The surrounding Totes Gebirge is built from Triassic Dachsteinkalk, its steep northern walls plunging toward the Almsee below. To the west the Kleine Woising, only 600 metres away and 1,879 metres high, forms a smaller companion peak. The contrast between the bare summit and the green high plateau below makes the Grosse Woising a rewarding goal for a day’s walk.
