Alton Towers

Alton Towers stands on a historic estate in Staffordshire, near the village of Alton. Once the stately home of the Earls of Shrewsbury, the grounds opened to the public in the late 19th century. Later, in the 1950s and 1960s, the Bagshaw family added a railway, fairground, boating lake and chairlift. Under John Broome’s leadership the site became a theme park in 1980, introducing rides such as the Corkscrew and Log Flume. The Tussauds Group took over in 1990 and expanded the park with attractions like Nemesis and Oblivion. Today it is run by Merlin Entertainments and includes hotels, a water park and conference centre. The park is worth the journey for its long history and steady stream of new attractions. It has welcomed more than two million visitors a year, making it Britain’s second most visited theme park. Major revivals such as Nemesis Reborn and the new Toxicator ride keep the experience fresh. The resort also hosts seasonal events like Scarefest and Christmas celebrations. Families can stay on site in hotels while children enjoy CBeebies Land and other themed areas. The combination of heritage and modern thrills draws crowds from across Europe. Inside the theme park, eleven distinct areas offer different rides and experiences. The SkyRide cable car links Towers Street, Forbidden Valley and the gardens, giving views over the grounds. Congo River Rapids and Galactica provide water and flying coaster thrills, while The Smiler and Wicker Man deliver high‑speed loops and immersive theming. The World of David Walliams and CBeebies Land provide gentler fun for younger visitors. Even the gardens and pathways between rides form part of the attraction, blending historic landscaping with modern entertainment.
