Winchester College

Winchester College stands in the heart of Winchester, Hampshire, on a 250-acre site that includes medieval courts, playing fields and water meadows. Founded in 1382 by William of Wykeham, it is England’s oldest continuously operating public school and has trained boys for over six centuries. The original scholars numbered seventy, supported by sixteen boy choristers, while paying pupils later joined as “commoners.” The college still houses its scholars in the medieval buildings, where a Wren-style classroom was added in the 17th century. A war cloister built in 1924 serves as a memorial to those lost in the two world wars. The college’s influence extends beyond its walls. Its statutes and prefect system shaped Eton and King’s College, Cambridge, in the 15th century. Royal visits in the 16th and 17th centuries brought Latin and Greek poetry from the pupils, while Queen Elizabeth I granted special exemptions to maintain Latin services. By the 1860s ten boarding houses were added, greatly increasing capacity, and today the school numbers around 690 pupils. From 2022 girls have been admitted to the sixth form, and a new girls’ boarding house is planned for 2026. Visitors can walk through Chamber Court, the chapel with its fan-vaulted ceiling, and the Cloisters where medieval glass fragments are preserved. The 17th-century School building and the early 20th-century art, science and music schools show the college’s architectural growth. The surrounding grounds include St Catherine’s Hill and the walled Meads sports field, where scholars once enjoyed open fires and quick access. Each boarding house carries its own name and letter, and houses compete in sports while preserving traditions like the Trusty Servant mascot and the school song Domum.
