Treago Castle

Treago Castle is a fortified manor house in Herefordshire’s gentle countryside. Built around 1500, it stands on solid bedrock near the Welsh border. The Grade I-listed building shows medieval design with a central courtyard and corner towers. Originally it had no external windows and a secure layout. Later owners added windows and covered the courtyard to create a more comfortable home. Mason’s marks link the builders to Raglan Castle and William Herbert, 1st Earl of Pembroke. The castle remains a private family residence but opens for charity events. The Mynors family has lived here since the house was built. Sir Richard Mynors and his wife Lady Fiona now live in the main building with their three daughters. The family also runs a vineyard on the estate, producing award-winning wines. A steam engine named after the castle once carried its name across Britain for thirty years. The grounds include landscaped parkland from the late 18th century. A walled garden, kitchen garden and Tudor-style garden with clipped yews surround the house. Renovations in the 1990s turned stables into holiday cottages and added a heated swimming pool. A fountain designed from the family crest and a small vineyard complete the estate. Japanese garden traces and geothermal heating show the family’s modern approach to heritage.
