Barony and Castle of Giffen

The Barony and Castle of Giffen stand on a ridge of whinstone in North Ayrshire, near the village of Beith. The site once formed the heart of a large feudal barony that included several smaller estates and stretched across half the parish. A burn called Powgree separated it from the neighbouring Barony of Beith, while Lugton Water marked part of its southern boundary. The name may come from an old word meaning ‘ridge’ or ‘shared boundary’, showing how the land was defined long ago. Remains of the old chapel and a holy well still hint at the spiritual life once centred here. A thirled mill and a Borestone, where people gathered for justice, show how the barony functioned in the Middle Ages. Giffen Castle began as a defensive tower in the 13th century and grew into a 40-foot-high stronghold in the 15th. By the 18th century it belonged to Sir John Anstruther, whose neglect hastened its ruin. In 1726 the roof was removed and stones taken to build Giffen Mill, leaving the interior exposed. The castle’s entrance once showed a carving of a man hunting with a crossbow, perhaps recalling a bold deed by a Giffen laird. Over time the walls crumbled, and by 1838 only scattered stones remained. A local poet wrote angrily of its fall, and later diggers found musket balls near the site, suggesting a forgotten skirmish. Today the remains of the castle lie scattered as a rockery beside the Mains of Giffen farmhouse. A marriage stone dated 1758 marks the door of this later house, built partly from castle masonry. Nearby, the old chapel well is still marked on maps, though its chapel has vanished. A grand Victorian mansion called Giffen House stands three kilometres away, built in Scottish Baronial style with thirty-five rooms and fine stables. The hamlet of Giffen once clustered close to the castle, but only a few traces survive. The land still holds bones from a forgotten fight and fragments of carved stone, silent witnesses to centuries of power and loss.
