Zicksee

The Zicksee is a small steppe lake in the Seewinkel region south-east of Vienna. It lies east of the village of Sankt Andrä and dries out from time to time. The water contains natron and was once thought to have healing powers, especially for skin and rheumatic conditions. The lake sits between the Neusiedler See and the Hungarian border, partly covered with reeds. The Zicksee is an important refuge for native and migratory water birds, strengthened by a stabilised water level. Ornithologists visit regularly to study the many species that pass through. The lake’s mineral-rich water was classified as mineral water in 1928, though drinking-quality water was only achieved outside the bathing season. After years of poor ratings, the water quality became excellent from 2015 onwards when the lake held water. Visitors find a camping site with about 370 pitches beside the lake, open from May to October. There are also guest rooms in Sankt Andrä and several eating places along the shore. The flat plains around the lake suit cycling routes to nearby nature reserves. Despite recent dry spells, the cared-for surroundings still attract photographers and birdwatchers. An annual orthodox water blessing ceremony continues even when the lake is dry.
