Lamachan Hill

Lamachan Hill stands in Dumfries and Galloway, a region of rolling hills and forests in south-west Scotland. It rises 716 metres above sea level and forms part of the Rhinns of Kells range. The land around the hill is mostly rough and steep, with few flat places. Newton Stewart, the nearest town, lies ten kilometres to the south. Broadleaf and conifer woods cover much of the lower slopes. The hill draws walkers who want quiet routes away from crowded paths. Its height gives wide views over Galloway Forest Park and the surrounding valleys. On clear days the peaks of Merrick and Kirriereoch can be seen to the north. The forest below is home to red squirrels and other wildlife. The silence on the upper slopes is broken only by the wind. A well-marked trail climbs from the car park near the forest edge. The path crosses burns and small waterfalls before reaching the open summit. From the top the land falls away in every direction, showing forests, moors and distant farms. The last stretch is steep, but the reward is a broad panorama of the Galloway hills.
