Pfarrkirche St. Pantaleon

The Catholic parish church of St Pantaleon stands in the village centre of St Pantaleon in the Amstetten district of Lower Austria. The Roman Catholic church is dedicated to St Pantaleon and belongs to the deanery of Haag in the diocese of St Pölten. It is protected as a listed monument. The church began as a small early Romanesque fortress chapel in the 11th century. By 1250 it had become a feudal parish of Zwieselkirchen under Rüdiger of Anschau. After the Reformation the Salburg family at Schloss Salaberg restored Catholic patronage from 1626 until 1982. A late-Gothic rebuilding was funded by Stefan Perger before 1521, and the church was restored again in 1984. The late-Gothic hall church has three supporting piers and a higher two-bay choir with a three-sided closure. The west tower, built on the Romanesque west wall and two gallery piers, contains a small Romanesque west choir above a crypt. A late-Gothic sacristy with a lean-to roof stands at the south choir angle. Inside, the church shows neogothic fittings by Hermann von Riewel, Josef Andergassen, Anton Dichtl and Josef Bachlechner. The 1520s font and 1903 organ by Johann Lachmayr are notable. Numerous wappengrabplatten and epitaphs from the 16th to 18th centuries line the walls and surround the churchyard.
