Burg Brettheim

Burg Brettheim stands on a 435-metre hilltop at the southern edge of Brettheim village, part of Rot am See in the Schwäbisch Hall district. The site once belonged to the lords of Brettheim, who held it as a Hohenstaufen fief between 1251 and 1444. By the mid-15th century it had passed to wealthy citizens of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Written traces such as the field names ‘Burggraben’, ‘Burgebauer’ and ‘Burgemichel’ still recall its former presence. The builders raised a solid stone house surrounded by ramparts and a moat. Archaeologists recognise it as a motte, a tower-mound castle typical of the High Middle Ages. By the time the German Peasants’ War began in 1525 the fortress had already vanished. Its stones were reused in later farm buildings around the hill. Today the gentle mound is covered with grass and young trees. A low earthwork marks the vanished moat, while ploughing has levelled the central platform. Visitors walk a farm track that circles the hill, reading the landscape rather than any standing ruins. The view stretches across rolling farmland towards the distant Franconian Heights.
