Brighton Community Stadium

Brighton Community Stadium stands on the edge of the South Downs near the University of Sussex. It is a modern football ground built into the chalk hillside, with three storeys below ground level. The stadium’s lower bowl is set deep in the earth, while its upper tiers rise towards the skyline. The site was chosen after years of planning and legal disputes with nearby councils. Excavation moved 138,000 cubic metres of chalk, later used to landscape the southern side of Village Way. The design allows for future expansion, though the present capacity already makes it the second-largest in South East England. The stadium became Brighton & Hove Albion’s permanent home in 2011, ending years of ground-sharing far from the city. It hosted its first competitive match in July 2011, a Sussex Senior Cup final won by the Albion development squad. The first league fixture followed soon after, against Doncaster Rovers, echoing the club’s final game at the old Goldstone Ground fourteen years earlier. In 2017 the stadium welcomed Premier League football for the first time after Albion’s promotion. European nights began in 2023 when the club played AEK Athens in the UEFA Europa League. Visitors enter through wide concourses that circle the ground at different levels. The East Stand, now enlarged with an extra tier, houses family areas and corporate boxes. The pitch sits below ground level, framed by steep banks of seats that rise towards floodlights. Beyond the stadium, the South Downs stretch away, while the University of Sussex campus lies close to the northern side. On match days the concourses fill with fans heading to turnstiles set into the chalk walls. The view from the upper tiers looks across the pitch to the distant downs, linking the modern ground to the surrounding landscape.
