The Hexagon

The Hexagon is a theatre and arts venue in Reading, Berkshire. It stands in an elongated hexagonal shape and was built in 1977 by Robert Matthew Johnson Marshall. The building is operated by Reading Borough Council under the name Reading Arts and Venues. It shares management with South Street Arts Centre and Reading’s concert hall. The Civic Centre sits next to it. The Hexagon was designed to host many types of events, from drama to boxing. Its arena-style seating allows clear views for sports like snooker or boxing. A review in the Architects’ Journal noted that dramatic performances were not the main focus. The adjustable floor can create a large stage area of 517 square metres. Balconies and inclined panels help with sound reflections, inspired by Christchurch Town Hall in New Zealand. The venue can seat up to 1,686 people depending on the event. Inside, the auditorium has removable seats and a balcony with gaps around it. The ceiling has rotatable acoustic screens to improve sound for balcony seats. The Hexagon hosts classical music, comedy, dance, drama, pop and rock concerts. It has also been used for snooker in the past. Work is under way to add a new Studio Theatre, set to open in 2027. Funding has been provided to update seating, fire doors and drainage.
