A15 road

The A15 is a major road running north from Peterborough through Lincolnshire. It follows ancient Roman routes and later turnpike alignments, passing through towns like Bourne, Sleaford and Lincoln. Between Scampton and the M180 it offers the longest straight stretch of road in the UK. The route is interrupted near Scawby where it meets the M180, then restarts 10 miles east. It crosses the Humber on the Humber Bridge before ending near Kingston upon Hull. The road carries traffic between Peterborough and Hull in about two and a quarter hours. Sections like Norman Cross to Bourne take 33 minutes, Bourne to Lincoln 46 minutes, and Lincoln to the Humber Bridge 54 minutes. The Market Deeping bypass opened in 1998 after a year of construction. The Sleaford bypass opened in 1993 after an 18-month build. RAF Waddington’s runway crosses the route, and a Vulcan bomber stands beside the road near the airfield. Drivers pass through market towns with roundabouts, hotels and pubs. Bourne has its grammar school, heritage centre and war memorial gardens beside the Bourne Eau. Near Folkingham the road turns sharply past the Greyhound pub. Lincoln’s eastern bypass crosses the River Witham on a viaduct before entering the city. The route also passes RAF Digby and the old RAF Coleby Grange site.
