Pitfirrane Castle

Pitfirrane Castle stands in the village of Crossford in Fife as a five-storey tower house of the 15th century. Its L-shaped form came from 16th-century work by George Halkett, who removed the parapet, added corner turrets and a new stair tower. A date-stone of 1583 marks the south front, and later Charles Halkett added a long east wing in the late 17th century. David Bryce designed a small porch in 1854 and a flat servants’ wing with a round tower on the north side. By the 19th and 20th centuries the castle had been altered several times before becoming the clubhouse of the local golf club in 1953. The building’s harled walls rise above the southern edge of the golf course on the edge of the village. The west front shows projecting corner turrets and a round tower capped with a slate cone roof. The main roof is of grey slate with dormer windows set into its lower slopes. Inside, the ground floor holds the entrance hall and a small museum room, while the upper floors contain meeting rooms and a bar. The servants’ wing still contains its original stone spiral stair. Outside, the castle is surrounded by the golf course and a low stone boundary wall. A gravel drive leads from the road to the main door, and a small car park sits beside the east wing. The round tower offers views across the course and the surrounding farmland. The whole site remains peaceful, with the castle’s historic fabric visible in every detail.
