Ealing Common tube station

Ealing Common station stands on the Uxbridge Road in the London Borough of Ealing. It is served by both the District and Piccadilly lines and lies in fare zone three. The station sits about 450 metres east of the junction with Gunnersbury Avenue and Hanger Lane. It takes its name from the nearby Ealing Common open space. Ealing Common is the only station west of Acton Town to be served by both lines. The station opened in 1879 as part of the District Railway’s extension to Ealing Broadway. In 1903 an electric service began between Ealing Common and Ealing Broadway, the first on the Underground’s surface lines. The present building, designed by Charles Holden, opened in 1931 and features a tall heptagonal ticket hall of Portland stone. In 1932 the Piccadilly line was extended west of Hammersmith, sharing tracks with the District line as far as Ealing Common. Today the station has a booking-hall kiosk and two platforms. Early-morning trains often enter service here after leaving the nearby depot. To the east of the eastbound platform are two siding roads used for shunting and reversing trains. London buses serve the station day and night, providing easy onward travel across the area.
