Ben Tirran

Ben Tirran is a mountain summit on the old drove road from Braemar to Montrose in the Grampians of Angus. It stands near the edge of a broad plateau that stretches east from the Cairngorms. A small stone trig point marks the highest point on the rounded summit. The hill is recognised as a Marilyn, a Corbett and a HuMP, categories that depend on height and prominence. Organisations such as the Scottish Mountaineering Club maintain these lists and share them on the Database of British and Irish Hills. The name is thought to come from the Gaelic for ‘high ridge’, though the exact form is uncertain. From the summit there are wide views across Strathmore to the Sidlaws and beyond. The plateau itself is covered in heather and rough grass, with few steep slopes. A faint path crosses the top, linking the old drove road to the minor road that climbs from the valley near Edzell.
