Bryn Amlwg Castle

Bryn Amlwg Castle stands on a prominent hill near Anchor in Shropshire, close to the England–Wales border. It was an enclosure castle built in the 12th and 13th centuries, with towers and a gatehouse. Today only earthworks remain, but archaeologists uncovered traces of its original wooden ringwork wall, later rebuilt largely in stone. The castle’s position near the border made it a key strategic fortification during medieval conflicts. Its builder is unknown, though its design resembles Dolforwyn Castle, possibly linked to Llywelyn ap Gruffudd in the late 1260s. Evidence of burning suggests it was destroyed or slighted during the Anglo-Welsh war of 1276–77. The site lies near the tripoint where Shropshire, Montgomeryshire and Radnorshire meet. This spot marks the confluence of two valleys, the Nant Rhydyfedw and the Nant Rhuddwr. The castle’s location highlights its role in controlling movement across the border. The scheduled monument status recognises its historical importance. Excavations in 1963 revealed details of its construction and eventual fate. Its remains offer a glimpse into the power struggles of the period. Visitors find a quiet hilltop with subtle earthworks marking the castle’s former walls. The surrounding landscape is rural, with valleys and open fields stretching into the distance. The tripoint’s location adds a geographical interest nearby. The site is peaceful, with no modern structures to distract from its history. The remains are subtle but evocative, hinting at the castle’s past significance.
