Hessenstein Observation Tower

Gut Panker stands in the rolling hills of Schleswig-Holstein’s Holsteinische Schweiz, near Lütjenburg. The five-hundred-year-old estate once belonged to the Rantzau family, powerful nobles who farmed the land from the late Middle Ages until 1740. In 1739 the Swedish king Friedrich of Hessen paid for the Gut with money from his royal treasury, giving it to his mistress Hedvig Ulrica Gräfin Taube and their two sons. The estate later passed to Landgraf Carl von Hessen-Kassel in 1808 and today belongs to the Hessische Hausstiftung. The house itself began as a modest 17th-century building enlarged in the 18th century into a baroque three-wing manor. Between 1800 and 1830 two tall towers were added at the back, giving the building its present shape. White façades and classical lines show the influence of 19th-century taste, while inside fragments remain of older painted ceilings and baroque ceiling frescoes from Hessian palaces. The garden, laid out between 1790 and 1795, once featured winding streams, ponds and a small classical temple, one of the finest English-style parks in the region. Visitors walk past the white manor house and its surrounding farmyards, now partly converted to galleries and craft workshops. The landscape garden lies beyond the private drive, its tree-lined paths and small water features visible from the road. The estate’s farm buildings include a restored gatehouse and a former cavalry house, both now part of the rural scene. Though the interiors of the manor remain private, the courtyards and parkland offer quiet views across fields and wooded hills typical of the Holsteinische Schweiz.
