St Mary's Church, Pitstone

St Mary’s Church stands on the edge of Pitstone village in Buckinghamshire, nine miles east of Aylesbury. Built mainly of limestone and flint, the Grade I listed building occupies a quiet corner south-east of the settlement. The oldest parts date from about 1250, though fragments from the 12th century show an earlier church once stood on the same spot. Over the centuries the nave, aisles, tower and chapel were added or rebuilt in stages, with major restorations in the 19th and 20th centuries. Since 1974 the Churches Conservation Trust has cared for the church with help from the Friends of Pitstone Church. The building is open to visitors on Sunday afternoons during the summer. The church’s architecture tells a story of changing styles and needs. The chancel and north chapel belong to the 13th century, while the tower and widened chancel came in the 15th. The nave arcades were rebuilt, and the south porch and vestry added later. The three-stage west tower has diagonal buttresses, a stair turret and bell openings in Perpendicular style. Inside, the north arcade’s octagonal piers support a wide nave that once held a rood loft. The chancel’s tiled floor, 14th- and 15th-century in date, leads to a 12th-century font with fluted bowl and stem. Visitors step into a space shaped by seven centuries of worship. A 17th-century hexagonal pulpit with sounding board stands beside a reading desk dated 1685. The altar table and box pews also survive from the 1600s, while the communion rails carry twisted balusters from the 1700s. A small brass of a 14th-century woman lies on the floor, and the east window holds 19th-century stained glass. Above the chancel arch hangs a painted royal coat of arms from 1733, flanked by panels of the Ten Commandments and the Lord’s Prayer. The single-manual organ, built in 1858 by A. W. Bryant, and three bells cast between 1652 and 1786 complete the scene.
