Christ Church, Cockfosters

Christ Church stands in Cockfosters, a northern London suburb, about 200 metres from Cockfosters Underground station. Built on Chalk Lane, it is an Anglican church with a conservative evangelical tradition. The church was founded by Robert Cooper Lee Bevan, whose family also established Barclays Bank. Its funerary monument to the Bevan family is the largest in the graveyard. Designed by Henry Edward Kendall, the church was consecrated by Bishop Blomfield on 9 April 1839. The church’s history includes a major renovation in 1898 by Sir Arthur Blomfield. Tubular bells were later added to honour former pupils of Heddon Court School who died in the First World War. St Paul’s Church in Hadley Wood began as an offshoot of Christ Church in 1911 before becoming independent in 2000. The Bevan family’s influence remains visible through their prominent monument in the churchyard. Visitors find a quiet suburban church with a graveyard containing the Bevan family’s large funerary monument. The building itself reflects its 19th-century origins and later alterations by Blomfield. The tubular bells add a historical layer tied to local school history. The churchyard is peaceful, with the Bevan monument as its most striking feature. The nearby Underground station makes it easily accessible from central London.
