Bwlch-y-Crwys round barrow

A round cairn from the late Stone Age and early Bronze Age stands on a ridge in the community of Pontarfynach, Ceredigion. The site, known as Bwlch-y-Crwys, is marked on maps at grid reference SN710776. Its builders placed stones in a circular heap to form the mound, likely for burial rituals and religious ceremonies. Cadw has listed the cairn as an ancient monument, giving it the unique SAM number CD122. Other prehistoric structures nearby include chambered tombs, standing stones, and hill forts built by the same people. The cairn sits on open moorland above the valley of the River Rheidol. Its position offers wide views across the surrounding hills and down to the wooded slopes below. The ridge itself is part of an older landscape shaped by glaciers and later farming. No large settlements grew near the site, so it remains undisturbed by modern development. The stones used to build the cairn were gathered from the immediate area, showing how the builders worked with the land. Visitors reach the cairn by following a farm track from Pontarfynach. The path climbs gently through rough pasture before reaching the open moor. At the top, the circular mound appears as a low rise in the grass, about ten metres across. The stones inside the mound are mostly hidden beneath turf, but the shape of the circle can still be seen. The quiet setting and the sense of age make the place a simple but powerful reminder of the people who lived here thousands of years ago.
